Evaluating Your Summer Insurance Needs

McVey Insurance, CA, Summer Insurance needsFor many people, summer is one of the most active times of the year. From outdoor sports to evening barbecues, summer is a fun-filled season. However, although these summer activities may be exciting and enjoyable, they can also increase your need for insurance coverage.

Summer Risks

The insurance-related risks you face in summer depend primarily on how you spend your time. For example, if you enjoy riding a motorcycle when the weather is nice, you run the risk of accidents, injuries and property damage. Likewise, if you like to host parties or barbecues, your risk of homeowners insurance claims may be higher in the summer. Other common summer risks include:

- Automobile accidents
- Boating accidents
- ATV accidents
- Sports-related injuries
- Liability claims for injuries occurring on your property

Protecting Yourself

Before the summer begins, review your current insurance policies to determine if your coverage levels are sufficient. If you ride a motorcycle or drive your car more frequently in the summer months, make sure that your insurance policy provides plenty of liability coverage in case of an accident. If you own an ATV, consider purchasing a separate insurance policy to cover it. In addition, if you will be hosting parties at your home, make sure your homeowners insurance policy includes generous coverage for liability claims. Finally, if you or a family member participates in any type of athletic activity during summer, take some time to review your health insurance policy.

For extra protection from liability, consider purchasing an umbrella insurance policy. Umbrella insurance will cover the cost of liability claims that exceed the limits of your other policies, such as homeowners insurance and auto insurance. This additional coverage helps to ensure that you will not be responsible for paying any liability claims out-of-pocket.

Reviewing all of your insurance coverage can be a daunting task. For assistance, consult our office.

Don’t fall for these insurance myths

McVey Insurance, CA, Facts or MythsWhen making a significant purchase, you do your homework.  Consumer reports on electronic gadgets to safety ratings for cars and inspection of a new house are all part of your homework.  Why wouldn’t you think you should do the same with insurance?

Myth #1:  Most people believe all insurance is the same

It’s not.  Not all insurance companies are all financially equal.  That can cause some problems in the future for claims.  To do your homework about the financial strength of the insurance company, go to A.M. Best Co.  They are an independent provider of insurer ratings.

Myth #2: Every insurance company provides the same coverage

Most insurance companies provide similar coverage, but every insurance company is different.  That can mean unique conditions and limitations.

Myth #3:  All customer service, including claims processing, are the same with every insurance company

Every company is different and that means different standardized policies for handling claims and basic customer service calls.  You can go to your states Department of Insurance to find out where you company ranks with customer complaints.

Myth #4:  There is no flexibility in the cost of your insurance

Contact us and we will work with you on how we can save you money based on your lifestyle or any other possible changes to your deductible.  We can also shop around for you to find the policy that fits your needs.

Mobile devices pose data breach threats

McVey Insurance, CA, Data breachesThe widespread use of smartphones and tablets in the workplace is exposing more and more businesses to liability for sensitive data being compromised if these devices are lost, stolen, or hacked. How can your company protect itself against this threat – and how much authority do you have over an employee’s personal device if it’s also used for work-related activities?

What’s more, because these gizmos are small and portable, it’s easy to misplace them. (The federal Transportation Safety Administration recently leased a warehouse just to store those misplaced or left behind at airports.)

Another emerging risk linked to these devices is a “bring your own” policy that many companies have adopted as a way to save costs by having employees spend their own money on smartphones and tablets that are constantly evolving and updated. This approach raises questions about separating company data from personal information on the device. For example, when an employee leaves, does a business have the authority to wipe the information from his or her smartphone? According to some authorities, if an employee connects a personal device to a company network, the company has inherited responsibility for the data stored on it.

To deal with this risk, you need to provide every employee who uses these devices with training, updated annually, on how to respond in case of loss or theft. To minimize potential liability for lawsuits by customers and clients, make sure that the individual responsible for the mishap informs management immediately. The compromised information might include everything from sensitive data (financial or medical) contacts, photos, call history, personal notes – you name it.

You can also use insurance to protect yourself against losses from data breaches. A policy will provide Liability coverage that deals with legal costs and third-party expertise (such as forensics firms to analyze a breach and call centers to provide information and public relations. Coverage might also include services such as access to tools to estimate costs, a checklist for your planned response to a data breach, and access to experts who can answer questions and review your company’s policies and procedures.

Be safe this holiday season!

Every Christmas season, people all over love to hop in their cars and check out the Christmas lights and decorations in hosting neighborhoods.  People go back to their homes and start decking their house to enjoy.  But did you know that each year, accidents involving trees and decorations damper the Christmas mood?  Here are a few tips to help prevent accidents from occurring.

  • When purchasing an artificial tree, find one that reads, “fire resistant.”   This will make extinguishing a fire easier.
  • If you choose to go with a live tree, get one that is fresh and green.  If you buy one earlier in the season, make sure it is watered to help prevent drying out.
  • Place your tree away from heaters, radiators and fireplaces.  Make sure the tree is out of the way and is not an obstruction.
  • Decorate with flame resistant tinsel.
  • All breakable and sharp tree ornaments are high, out of the reach of the children.
  • When using lights, make sure the lights have been tested and that it’s clearly labeled on the box.
  • Prevent outdoor lights from blowing away by securing the lights to the home or tree.

We hope these few tips will help your Christmas season be accident free.

Save a Bundle by Bundling Insurance

Bundling insurance products with one company – and scoring cheaper premiums as a reward – isn’t a new concept. But, according to a recent study by J.D. Power and Associates, not only is bundling still popular among consumers, it also results in higher customer satisfaction.

The study found that nearly 60 percent of customers bundle auto and homeowners policies with the same insurer.

When customers need additional products – such as motorcycle, boat and life insurance – 77 percent of them choose to bundle. The study notes that insurance bundlers also tend to be more satisfied with their insurers overall, not just with the premium discounts they’re getting.

“It’s easier to manage insurance policies when you don’t have to work with multiple insurers. And if you have a claim, you just need to call one company.”

Take a look at all your insurance policies. If they’re not with the same insurance company, you could be losing as much as 25 percent in bundling discounts on each car, as well as on your homeowners policy. Think about including your life insurance, as well, which could result in another 2 to 5 percent in savings.

Research options for renters. If you don’t own your home, bundling may still be an option. Look into bundling a renters policy with your car insurance, which might result in as much as a 20 percent discount on your auto coverage. Because renters insurance is inexpensive, it may almost pay for itself by savings through bundling.

Give McVey Insurance a call to find out how bundling your policies can save you money.

Reflective dog bowl sparks California house fire

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California couple might be able to blame this one on the dog.

Authorities say sun refracted off the dog’s shiny water bowl and ignited a fire at Terry and Shay Weisbrich’s Santa Rosa home on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was quickly put out, but it left a hole in the siding. The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa reports that a fire department engineer helped discover the dog bowl’s role in the fire.

Rene Torres returned the bowl to its original position during his investigation of the fire’s cause. He found it concentrated light right on the area of the home that was charred.

The Press Democrat says the couple’s dog, Toby, had a replacement bowl by the evening.

You never know when something unexpected will happen.  McVey Insurance Agency has the homeowner’s insurance information you need to protect your home and its contents.  Call them today!
